Enhance®Fitness – Fall Prevention & Arthritis Management for Kupuna (60+)
Enhance®Fitness is an evidence-based, nationally recognized program designed to help older adults stay active, improve mobility, and manage arthritis symptoms. Classes focus on building strength, balance, endurance, and flexibility in a supportive and fun environment.
Certified instructor-led classes are designed to keep participants active and empowered for independent living. Exercises are safe, adaptable, suitable for all fitness levels, and can be done seated or standing.
Who is this class for?
- Adults aged 60+
- Individuals looking to reduce arthritis symptoms and improve endurance, strength, and flexibility
- Those at risk for falls who want to improve balance and coordination
Program Details
- Program Length: 16 weeks
- Class Schedule: 60-minute classes, 3 times per week
- Continuation: After enrolling, participants may continue attending beyond the initial 16 weeks without re-enrolling. If you choose to stop attending, please visit a YMCA Welcome Center to unenroll.
- Eligibility:
- YMCA members age 60+
- Exception: Classes at Kawaiahaʻo Church are open to the general public
- Requirements:
- Pre- and post-program fitness assessments
- Fully covered athletic shoes
- Cost:
- FREE at most locations, thanks to generous grant funding
- Pearl City Community Church: $68/month (paid directly to the church)
Registration: Registration is required. Due to HIPAA documentation, online registration is not available. Please register in person at the location indicated below. Thanks to grant funding, all community members aged 60+ are welcome to enroll at this time.
What to Expect in Each Class
- Five-minute warm-up to get blood flowing to muscles
- Twenty minutes of low-impact aerobics or walking to lively music
- Five-minute cooldown to safely reduce heart rate
- Twenty minutes of upper and lower body strength training using soft ankle or wrist weights
- Ten minutes of stretching to improve flexibility
- Balance and posture exercises integrated throughout

Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention
Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention is an evidence-based program recognized by the CDC that incorporates Tai Chi principles for improving health and wellness as well as proven effective for fall prevention. Based on Sun-style Tai Chi, it has gentle flowing movements that are easy to learn, safe and enjoyable for all levels, and can be modified to a seated position.
Y members and participants enrolled in the Kupuna Food & Fun Program have access to Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention at the Kaimuki-Waialae Y, Kalihi Y, Leeward Y, Mililani West Oahu Y, Nu‘uanu Y, and Windward Y locations!
