Aikido

The goal of Aikido training is to harmonize with the flow of universal energy (also known as “ki”) and improve one’s character. Aikido focuses on self-defense, mind/body coordination, discipline, awareness, concentration, confidence, and respect. Available at the Kalihi Y and Nu‘uanu Y for ages 6 and up as well as the Leeward Y for ages 12 and up.

Judo

With an emphasis on fun and physical activity, judo provides a means for learning and improving one’s self-discipline, character, self-defense, and physical endurance. Available at the Kaimuki-Waialae Y for ages 8 and up and Mililani Y for ages 6 and up.

Karate

Karate helps increase confidence and discipline, improve concentration, build good sportsmanship and character, improve coordination, reflexes, and overall fitness. Shotokan karate is available at the Mililani-West Oahu Y for ages 6 and up. Beginner and intermediate karate is available at the Nu‘uanu Y for ages 6 and up.

Kickboxing with Kurvon Battle

Kickboxing offers a fun, high-energy way to build strength, confidence, and coordination. Participants learn proper technique, safety, and foundational striking skills in a supportive environment while improving fitness, discipline, and focus. Classes are open to all skill levels and allow individuals to progress at their own pace. Led by experienced instructor Kurvon Battle, who brings a strong background in training and a passion for mentoring youth. Available at the Mililani Y for youth and teens.

Mixed Martial Arts

Mixed Martial Arts combines striking, grappling, balance, and ground skills to build strength, coordination, and confidence in a safe, structured environment. Classes emphasize strong fundamentals, self-control, discipline, and respect while promoting overall fitness and practical self-defense skills. Available at Leeward Y for teens and adults.

Senior Self-Defense

Designed for adults ages 65 and older, this program focuses on improving balance, posture, and confidence in a safe, supportive environment. Participants learn practical fall-prevention strategies, gentle mobility exercises, and awareness techniques to enhance stability and everyday movement. Classes promote independence, reduce fall risk, and support overall physical and emotional well-being. Available at Leeward Y for ages 65 and up.
